They say Australia is a country of immigrants. Almost everyone came from somewhere else, whether one, three or five generations previously. And while immigrants quickly fall in love with the great weather and beautiful outdoor lifestyle, the heart strings often tug for home.
Sophie Marais* is a woman with a global footprint. She was born in South Africa to an Italian mother and South African father. After spending time in Zimbabwe, the family moved to the U.K. for her teenage years. As a young adult she met her future partner and they moved back to his home country of Australia. While she expresses joy at the life she’s built, including the addition of two beautiful daughters, she hasn’t been home in over five years and expressed the sadness she felt at missing her family and traditions.
Her favorite movie for 2018 is “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!” – a film that proved popular with the Australian public. It ranked tenth in the Australian Yearly Box Office, grossing $16,617,997 – no small feat in a country with a population of just over 25 million people.
Sophie looks lost in nostalgia as she talks about how the movie, although sad, really resonates with her because it brings to mind the sweetness of life, family and friendship – the very things she sometimes feels are missing in her own life. Close friendships are forged over lifetimes of shared history, and family is irreplaceable. The sense of truly belonging in a place and in a community is not something freely attained. Sophie expressed how she loved that Donna found her place in a foreign country and weathered life’s challenges while still keeping her joy.
The movie also brought to mind the passion that accompanied her childhood, with its Italian and Greek influences through family and friends. Sophie said adapting to a more restrained, less affectionate society had been challenging sometimes, and she really enjoyed being transported back to her childhood in a symbolic way.
