In Mantua, an 11 year old child named Marco, died from asphyxiation when his home burned down at the hands of his father, Gianfranco Zani. The mother, Silvia (39) is now in the Pediatrics ward at the Casalmaggiore hospital, along with her two other children, aged 17 and 4. In shock, she has declared, “Nobody has helped me.”
The mother’s story
The woman had lost a son at the hands of her husband. After mourning the tragedy that took place in Mantua, she explains herself.
A week ago, without informing her husband, Silvia had filed a separation request. The family had, as a precaution, asked to change the door lock, but the appeal fell on deaf ears. Sylvia reported, “He told us, ‘I will burn you all. I will burn everything with you inside.’”
Zani had threatened his family several times. Then the threat became reality. When he heard of her plans for separation, he became aggressive and violent even towards their three children. “I did everything to defend them, but it was not enough, they did not help me,” Silvia said.
Burning down the house was only the last act. On Nov. 9, Zani had flung himself at his wife, who had filmed everything with a cell phone. Following complaint, Zani was ordered to stay away from the house where his wife and children lived in Via Tasso.
There was no order by the judge to change the lock. The tragedy could have been avoided. Silvia said, “When I got back home I crossed his car, he came back and rammed me in. I headed home, smoke came in through the windows, I tried to get in, but it was impossible.”
Gianfranco Zani is now accused of aggravated murder and arson. Yesterday, he was admitted to the psychiatry department to prevent self-inflicted injuries.
