Going for a vacation can be fun but sometimes it can turn into tragedy. A Chinese tourist was taking photos in a wildlife resort in Kenya when he suddenly got attacked by a hippo.
Sixty-six-year-old Chang Ming Cuang was attacked at the shores of Lake Naivasha when a hippo bit his chest as he was taking the photos close to the hippo. Another Chinese man with the name Wu Peng, aged sixty-two, was also attacked at night and was rushed to a local health center for treatment.
So far six people lost their lives this year after being attacked by the herbivorous living around Lake Naivasha. Reports from Kenya Wildlife service indicate that Chang was declared dead on arrival to the hospital.
Witnesses said that the man was in the company of his friends who were also taking photos near Sopa Hotel when this happened. A man who happened to witness the incident said that the tourist was standing close to the Hippo while taking photos when it attacked him and bit him on the chest.
According to the Chairperson of Lake Naivasha Boat Owners Association, the Hippo attacks have increased due to the increase in water levels. It is said that the hippo was looking for pasture near that hotel when it attacked the man.
There is an earlier incident whereby an illegal fisherman was also killed by a Hippo. Another middle-aged man was also killed after staying around that area.
“We have seen a rise in cases of human-wildlife conflict around the lake and this is mainly due to the encroachment of the riparian land,” said Kilo, a warden in that area.
