In Cape Town, South Africa, a six year old boy died recently after neighborhood dogs maul him in front of family.
Uriel Ockhuis was viciously attacked by rottweilers this week while his family stood by and helplessly watched him die. The incident happened in Hillview on Gladiola Street while the boy was outside playing with his friends. It was reported that the boy was bitten about 72 times.
Family watches in horror
It turned out that the day of Ockhuis’ death was also his father’s birthday. Ockhuis’s father came home from work and brought him biscuits, after which the boy teased his mother and ran outside to play with his friends. Thereafter, the boy’s sister reported that he was being attacked by the dogs.
Morne Ockhuis, the boy’s brother, said that he watched helplessly after trying to assist along with bystanders and neighbors. According to the Cape Times, he is still in shock about the death of his brother, which happened right before his eyes.
It was reported to the SAPS (South African Police Station), and the Muizenberg police had responded to the call around 7 p.m. according to the SAPS Captain FC van Wyk. Ockhuis was thereafter taken to hospital and unfortunately declared DOA (dead on arrival).
Remorseful dog owner
The owner of the two rottweilers, Jonathan January, said that he would have gone as far as killing his own dogs in order to prevent the incident had he been present. He even said that he agreed to have the dogs put down by the SPCA because he “cares more about children than dogs.” He also mentioned that his dogs had never showed him any aggression.
The dogs have been put down according to the SPCA, and anyone with more information can contact the SAPS.
