The 12 farm workers of African origin, who were traveling crammed into a van, were returning from the tomato harvest. In the terrible head-on collision with a grain truck, there were also 3 injured. Rescuers struggled to extract the massed corpses between the plates of the vehicle.
Another sore point is that the transport from the barracks to the fields is paid by the workers themselves.
Some politicians expressed their condolences, at the same time expressing their thoughts about the terrible tragedy.
The president of Puglia Michele Emiliano in a long post on Facebook wrotes of “an endless pain is affecting Puglia and Italy”. “They were all extraordinary wonderful workers, honest people like the four victims of the accident, terribly similar, a few days ago – writes the governor – who concludes:” I have repeatedly urged the governments succeeded in recent years, which have exclusive competence for order and public security, to implement the protocols stipulated with the Puglia Region in synergy with the union, the mayors, the police station, the prefecture. You can, you must do something and immediately”.
The Minister, Matteo Salvini, has instead recorded measures to combat these exploitation phenomena. “We will gradually empty the ghettos, you will also have to attack – added Salvini –the assets of mobsters who live with illegal hiring”.
Premier Giuseppe Conte: “We must make sure that it doesn’t happen again. It is also about encouraging entrepreneurs with mechanisms that encourage them to promote working conditions while respecting their dignity. “He added:” The compass of this government is to guarantee dignity in life and work. For the phenomenon of illegal hiring, we must strengthen the instruments of control and prevention and to introduce measures to support agricultural quality work”.
Deputy Prime Minister Di Maio: “Monday was a bad day for our country – said the Minister of Labor Luigi Di Maio – As for Foggia, we don’t need to make new laws. There are already, but the state is not yet equipped to check the transgression I’m thinking about an urgent provision to open an extraordinary competition for labor inspectors Today there are a few hundred people who have to control millions of realities and businesses, the law on illegal hiring is there, as well as those against I work in black”. The vice premier added that “soon” will give more details about the competition.
“Puglia’s tragedies remind us how the life of the laborers is too often linked to unacceptable conditions of life and work – the president of the Chamber Roberto Fico wrote on Facebook – this scourge has a name: the illegal hiring. And It must be fought hard with serious interventions”.
