New York City has the best public transportation in the United States.
You can literally get to any place in New York using either train or bus.
Train is the fastest way for New Yorkers to get from Bronx,
Brooklyn or Queens to Manhattan, where majority of jobs are located.
But how safe is public transportation in New York?
From time to time, we hear terrifying stories about NY subway being
New York City’s biggest deathtrap. Let’s face it, subway in
New York needs a lot of improvement: it is dirty, smelly,
many stations have poor ventilation, the rats are everywhere,
and it is unbearably crowded. Bad subway conditions are very difficul
t for hard-working people, students and tourists, who rely on
our public transit daily. But, what worries us most is not even that.
Do we have any guarantees that paying $3 for a single ride ticket
will get us to our destination safely?
Just nearly twenty years ago, New York City was full of criminals.
We had murders, thefts, drugs, rape, you name it.
And many of these crimes happened underground.
Rudy Giuliani, the Mayor of NYC back then,
will be forever remembered as the man,
who cleaned the streets of New York City from crime.
And when I say: the streets, I also mean NYC subway.
It is absolutely safe to be on the train today, even in the middle of the night.
But, don’t get completely relaxed; not just yet.
A new version of a terror today is a suicidal individual,
who struggles with mental disorders.
It’s not an epidemic. You don’t have to stress too much about it.
But a few things every New Yorker who uses trains should remember.
Don’t get too close to the train tracks when you are waiting for the train to arrive.
Look at people around you, don’t just stare at your phone.
If someone seems disoriented or, somehow, suspicious to you,
walk away. You can report this individual to the subway security / police.
Do not take a risk.
On July 26th, a man with a mental disorder, pulled a woman from
the platform onto the subway tracks. It happened in Brooklyn,
a little longer than a month ago. They both were killed.
Do a research. You will find a long list of similar accidents in NYC.
Subways are still very safe and can be a lot of fun.
Please use common sense.
Take precautions against such accidents, and you, your family and your friends will be safe.
