Rose Mary Odinga is the daughter of the Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga. Odinga had followed her father’s footsteps in politics when she showed interest in taking the Kibera Parliamentary seat in 2017. However, she later stopped her plans for participating in 2017 elections when her health started deteriorating
How did she start getting sick?
Opposition leader Odinga together with his wife Ida Odinga expressed their worry about their daughter early last year when she started getting sick. Ms Odinga suffered from a stroke.
She got sick to the extent that she was bedridden in Nairobi. She was later transferred for advanced treatment in South Africa where she stayed for a couple of months. The ailment forced her to stop her plans in politics and concentrate on getting better.
Odinga underwent surgery, but unfortunately, she became blind after the operation.
Despite the loss of her sight, Ms Odinga still had an idea of transforming the lives of the Kibera residents positively. When she came out of the hospital this year, she went to visit the people of Kibera.
Her confidence and positive attitude towards her vision inspired the public. Aside from her positive remarks, she also gave out some sewing machines to the residents of Kibera slums.
“Leo sina sauti kama vile mmenizoea. (Today my voice is not as strong as you are used to). I am getting more confident now on my new life after losing my sight following the surgery.” She said.
“Since my operation and losing my sight, I, m happy people are welcoming, and I am now getting confident in how I interact with people and communicate,” she added.
