The presidency of Rodrigo Duterte, the Filipino president, has come a long way since its start on June 30, 2016. The Duterte government has had its fair share of the limelight with its major renovations of the country. Most especially, the movement towards the eradication of drugs in the Philippines, which caught the attention of international ears.
From the past controversy of the battle between territories with the China Republic, the Duterte presidency has been in the heat of several debates among other political personages and also the Filipino public with topics involving the Chinese government.
Filipinos welcome the Chinese leader
Yet again, President Duterte faces another China-Philippines controversy. In a recent visit from Chinese President, Xi Jinping, the two political leaders discussed 29 agreements.
While expecting a peaceable agreement to conclude the historic visit of the Chinese leader after a long time of 13 years, militant groups have gathered around the Chinese embassy in Makati City as a protest against Jinping’s visit.
Later in the afternoon, protesters left, and caused no violence among the public or toward the visitor.
China deals and the Philippines
The agreement made was said to involve mostly projects on infrastructure including bridging projects like the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge Project and the Esrtella-Pantallon Bridge Project. These projects individually costs P5.27 billion, which are all accounted to China’s assistance.
Around RMB 1.284 billion (P9.729 trillion) of grants were provided by China since Duterte’s governance, according to Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines, Zhao Jianhua.
Duterte needs the sympathy of the people
While the people at large have been promised these great projects, politicians have also stated that the president needs to show other nations that the Philippines can stand on its own and must refrain from bowing down to China.
Considering he looked up to by the people as a president that stands up to others, Sen. Risa Hontiveros proclaimed “But all of this is empty bravado if he continues to kowtow before China.”
