In recent years, there have been more and more Chinese students studying in Taiwan. Most of these students come from key universities – all of whom are masters and doctors – but these students may find it hard to imagine that in the course of their daily studies and life, they may have been targeted by Taiwan’s military spies.
On September 16th, China’s Ministry of national security disclosed some cases of Taiwan spies stealing Chinese mainland secrets. Taiwanese spies mainly use the means of money and eroticism to trick Chinese exchange students.
In one case, a mechanical engineering male student named Zhe, went to a university in Taiwan to study in 2011. At a party he attended, a woman took the initiative to talk to him, drinking and chatting, and then two people developed into lovers. During this time, the woman asked to have sex with him and gained his trust.
After completing his studies in Taiwan, Zhe returned to mainland China and participated in national key projects. Like ordinary lovers, they frequently expressed love and longing through email and phone calls but, unlike most people, the Taiwanese woman had always shown an unusual interest in Zhe’s project. She often asked Zhe to talk about his project details and asked him to provide some project documents to her. After getting these documents, she gave Zhe some money as a labor fee.
However, in 2014, the woman’s activities were discovered by the national security department and the true face of the so-called lovers was revealed. It turned out that this woman is a spy officer of the Taiwan Military Intelligence Bureau, 16 years older than Zhe. She used all means to lure Zhe, and thus controlled him in order to obtain intelligence.
A Chinese mainland spokesman, on September 16th, urged Taiwan to stop carrying out infiltration and sabotage activities against the mainland after authorities cracked more than 100 cases involving spies from Taiwan who duped students from the mainland into sharing confidential information with them.
