A long time ago, there was a peaceful land known by its people’s kindness and simplicity. Palestine is definitely no longer peaceful or quiet. Many people around the world are familiar with the struggles Palestinians face, but few people know about its past and who actually lived there.
There can be no doubt that Palestine has been the land of Muslims, Christians, Jews and Samaritans over the centuries. All have lived together peacefully, safely and equally until 67 words were published in a declaration called “The Balfour Declaration.” It was issued by the British government announcing the support for the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine. Thereafter, there were waves of Jewish immigration and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict began. In the twenty first century, Israel has had full control of the land. Not only was Palestine affected by the Balfour Declaration, but also the entire Middle East was wracked.
Trump’s Jerusalem announcement
On Dec. 6, 2017, president Trump announced the United States’ recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and ordered the planning of the relocation of the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The embassy was officially relocated on May 14, 2018. This American-Israeli cooperation means handling the flag needed to continue killing and expelling the Palestinians from their own land.
Trump’s announcements quickly sparked a wave of anger in the streets. Demonstrations were everywhere and the Great March started in Gaza. Hundreds of Palestinians were killed and thousands were wounded by the Israelis during the protests. A nurse, Razan Najar, was one of the victims. Her family expressed how they no longer have peace and rest. So Palestinians, with their bare hands, are prepared to fight as long as they can. The last young man will not surrender until their rights return. If the Palestinians had continued fighting and Israelis had not used heavy weapons, Palestinians would have taken their stolen land and lived in peace again.
According to a recent Newsweek article, “The U.S. Needs to Step Up its Game on Palestine-or Step Aside,” writer Tarek Hamoud, the CEO of the Palestinian Return Center, says, “Until now, the president’s approach to U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East has focused on fighting terrorism, containing Iran, and supporting Israel. His approach to Israel-Palestine is reflective of this strategy; he has played both nations off each other, and following the embassy move to Jerusalem, he whimsically declared that ‘the Palestinians will get something very good because it’s their turn next.'”
“Shortly after this, the president halted all U.S. funding to UNRWA and ordered closure of the PLO office in Washington DC. These actions threaten to completely alienate the Palestinian people,” Hamoud added.
As mentioned above, Trump eliminated U.S. funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). More than $375 million were cut in just one move. In Nov, 2018 the U.S. embassy delivered the USAID a message to cut the number of its employees to the half, and their intention to stop funding its projects in 2019. “I don’t know what will I do next year my family was able to live a respectful life from the salary I receive, soon I will join the train of unemployment,” said Shadi Maali, a building worker at USAID projects.
“2018 was filled with worry and sadness of Trump’s call but no more,” Maali added.
What Trump’s actions seem to accomplish is to push millions of Palestinian refugees towards giving up their deep attachment to their homeland. Palestinians won’t just surrender and their deep love to their homeland will never vanish.
Is the mystery of Trump’s deal of the century revealed?
President Trump pretends that good things are planned for the Palestinians in his “deal of the century,” but up till now nothing seems promising. This deal is a mystery for the Palestinians and no one knows what to expect.
When will Trump reveal it?
Last month, Jason Greenblatt the envoy of the White House peace plan was in London, where he mentioned in a closed conference that the plan will “soon” be published as was reported.
What will 2019 hold? Will it have a new war?
