As last month was an awareness month for children whom are born with cleft lip and cleft palate. Many people may wonder what a cleft lip is, or palate is. Each year in the U.S., thousands of babies are born with a cleft, occurring when tissue in the baby’s upper lip or roof of the mouth does not join completely during pregnancy.
Including myself, I was born with a birth defect that was the cleft lip and palate. Those who were born with it, may have to go under a lot of surgeries to fix it, or they may have a metal plate in their mouth to close their palate.
As the babies grow up they might get pick on for their speech, or how they look different from the other kids. I tell you this those babies are beautiful. They are strong and will become stronger.
As time progress other people are being aware of this defect, currently no cure to this defect or what may be causing this birth defect. It may can be prevent also. If you take any type medicine for mental health, it may cause your child to have a birth defect. It also could a genetic problem. Since I was born with a cleft lip and palate my baby was born with a tiny cleft lip. Although her cleft wasn’t bad she still needed surgery which was at the age of 3 months.
If you ever see a parent with a child that might have a problem whether it a cleft or something else. Tell the parent they are doing a great job and not listen to what people have to say. I am sure that parent like any other parent have probably been shamed for it.
